Maple Chicken & Waffles (Iron Chef Battle Maple Syrup)

Fall has officially arrived. And with it, comes blustery winds, darker days, and leaves. Lots of leaves. When I was younger, Fall meant back to school and an earlier bed time. I was one of those strange kids who loved going back to school, but now that I’m grown-up (sort of!), I can appreciate Fall even further. It is by far my most favorite season. I obviously love the beautiful colors of the leaves changing, and I love the smells. And the food. Comfort. Food.

Around here, September (and sometimes October, if we’re lucky) brings about a final burst of summer, minus the “fudgies” (Northern Michigan’s lovingly-appointed name for the tourists). Shopkeepers get a chance to slow down, local business owners finally get out on the lake, and the locals finally get a chance to get together and see each other again.

Leelanau Iron Chef Potluck: Battle Asparagus

Iron Chef Battle III brought us to Chandra and Bart’s house. Chandra, being the winner of Battle Root Veggie, chose asparagus as the showcase ingredient. I have to admit, I was somewhat flabbergasted by her choice. Though asparagus was fresh and in-season, I just couldn’t get the creativity flowing for this one, so settled on a mini asparagus quiche. It was good, but no match for the other entries. The other contestants brought some great things to the table!

Leelanau Iron Chef Potluck: Battle Root Veggie

Battle II of Leelanau Iron Chef was another huge success. Fourteen of us gathered for Melissa’s ingredient pick: root vegetables. With the exception of maybe some chicken broth here and there, all the dishes were vegetarian! Again, the dishes were very creative and varied.

Leelanau Iron Chef Potluck: Battle Citrus

1st place: Clementine French Macarons with Lime Cream Cheese Filling

This past weekend, we hosted the first-ever Leelanau Iron Chef Potluck. A blogger friend of mine started the Iron Chef potluck while we lived in Chicago, and I loved it so much that I had to start it up here in Northern Michigan. I was a tad nervous that my Up North friends wouldn’t take to it like Michael and I had, but my fears were for nothing. My friends embraced the challenge of the assigned ingredient (citrus!) and brought a ton of creativity that I did not expect. Read More »

Battle Pistachio (or Michael’s title: It’s Called I Win)

A couple weekends ago I was introduced to a fantastic group of people and a fantastic food competition: Potluck Iron Chef. How did I get an invitation to this prestigious event?

Michael’s Kenna’s Pistachio Sliders

The internet is a crazy place. About a year ago, Heather, of http://chiknpastry.com/, google’d Chef Pierre Pollin, a Kendall College Chef Instructor. She was looking for a photo of him to place on her blog. What popped up in the google search? My blog. (I had a photo of him on my blog, which I found on this blog). Heather quickly learned that I too was attending Kendall College for a culinary certificate. She started reading my blog. She commented on some of my posts. I started reading her blog. I commented on her posts. Fast-forward a few months, and we felt like we actually knew each other pretty well, no matter that we had never actually met! Read More »
