Plehn’s Bakery, Louisville, KY

hellolouisville.com

A few years back, on my very first “official” visit to Louisville (I had been to Louisville in the past for the Derby, but not as Michael’s girlfriend or wife), Michael’s grandfather picked us up from the airport and upon Michael’s request immediately drove us to Plehn’s Bakery. Plehn’s is located in the pleasant neighborhood of St. Matthews. It’s an old-school bakery with cute cakes in the windows, charmingly-apron’d staff, and a plethora of baked goods (donuts, cookies, cupcakes, pastries and cakes).

Grits to My Shrimp

Sometimes you just need a helping hand. What are husbands for, right?

For the past two-three months, I’ve been a bum. I’ve gone to bed early, slept in longer than usual, and let’s just say I’ve let the house go….laundry, dishes….bathroom cleaning….it has all fallen by the way-side.

I have a good excuse though, I swear. Well, two good excuses:

Birthday Party fit for a Queen

The Fam: Jori, Michael, Freddie, little Ava, Kenna, the Birthday Girl, Dad, Robb, Jamie

It’s hard to do a milestone birthday (60!!) for your favorite mom, but we gave it our best. We started out by surprising her with a limo….then we went to a few wineries and got her good and liquored-up. Just when she thought her celebrity status was over, we took her to dinner…where 20 of her closest friends were waiting to surprise her! I was in charge of the birthday cake….read on to see photos, the recipes, and more! Read More »

Kitchen Confidential

My dad’s the type of guy you don’t want to play Balderdash with. Balderdash, the board game where the host chooses a word, definition largely unknown, and each of the people participating writes down a silly/believable definition for the word. The host then reads all the definitions, including the “true” definition of the word, authors remaining anonymous, and then the group votes on the best/most likely definition of the word. The reason you don’t play with my dad? He most likely knows the true definition of the word, no matter how obscure, and writes it down on his card. When the host ends up reading two very similar definitions, one the “true” definition, one my dad’s, everyone is tipped off, and therefore, the game is ruined.

My dad and Mr. Anthony Bourdain

There are only two guys I know who can use the word “excoriate” in a sentence: my dad…..and Anthony Bourdain.

Krispy Kreme Challenge: Michael’s Video

It has been said that Michael and I like to eat. And those who know Michael, both well and even not-so-well, know that he has a passion for food, and an iron stomach to take it, a talent and a curse. Which is why when Michael asked that I accompany him on the food challenge of his life, the Krispy Kreme Challenge, I was not surprised. The challenge goes like this: fly down to Raleigh, North Carolina, show up on NC State’s campus early in the morning (perhaps after a night of beer, and maybe some fried pickles and peppers), run about two and a quarter somewhat hilly miles, eat a DOZEN Krispy Kreme donuts, and then run the two and a quarter miles back….mostly uphill. I committed as a casual runner, thus better equipped to support Michael, document the feat, and, as a bonus, hopefully be more adept to quickly dodge what surely would be an all-out puke-fest.

Germany and Michigan

I’ll be the first to admit: Michael and I have a relationship that revolves around food.

Clockwise from top: Beef Gulasch, Bratwurst & Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage, German Mushroom Salad, and in the middle, Bread Dumpling

That said, in observing our 10+ years of knowing one another, you’d see that our initial attraction came about due to our mutual love of numbers (that’s right…accounting class….pretty sexy stuff, people!) and our competitive streak on the intramural fields/courts at IU.

A Bus, a Milk Chug, and Six Cupcake Shops

Well, the cupcake crawl happened. And it was pretty darn cool. Michael and I were floored by the response we had…almost everyone we invited was able to come! I think if you tell people there will be cupcakes (and booze), they make a fair attempt to attend.

Lemon Meringue cupcake from More.
Michael (aka husband of the year….we’ll make it husband of 2010, since he planned this in 2010. He still has to earn the title for the current year!) came up with the cupcake crawl idea from his hair cutter lady, of all people. She mentioned something about a friend doing a cupcake crawl in Chicago, and he (immediately, I’d like to think) thought of me and my then-imminent graduation from culinary school. What better way to celebrate than eat a ton of cake on a bus with a bunch of friends and family?! Read More »

Spooning with pumpkin butter

My latest craze is Trader Joe’s pumpkin butter. I like to put it in cake batters, mix it into marinades, but mostly, I just eat it with a spoon. It’s got the perfect balance of pumpkin taste, holiday spices, and sweetness.

Would I eat it with goat cheese?

Why the heck not?

[the cake on thanksgiving day....that may or not be a turkey flying in the background!]

Uncommon Ground – Part II

I wrote about this place not too long ago. We just had another dinner there that trumped the last one, so I had to write again. Uncommon Ground. This place rocks. If you haven’t been, and you’re in the Chicago area….GO. Now. Their breakfast (and coffee) is good too, but go for dinner. It will not disappoint.

What did we eat?

What a blast

Well, I’ve been busy, to say the least. While I compose my post about the dessert bar I did for a 200-person wedding this past weekend, I’ll leave you with a couple shots from the photo booth at the wedding….it was a blast, to say the least. Katey and Kyle are by far the most fun couple ever!
