The Quiche of All Quiches

Michael and I recently moved to our very first home! No more shared walls or un-attached garages, but we also no longer have free maintenance services to call anytime anything goes awry. Our lives will now revolve around projects, projects, and more projects. But, we are happy, and we love the view and ever-changing landscape of the lake, the trees, and the seasons.

We had a few friends over for a house-warming party a couple weeks ago. It was pretty low-key, with people in and out throughout the morning and afternoon, so I made a couple quiches and my mom was kind enough to whip up a batch of her decadent cinnamon rolls.

Sticky Bun Pancakes

In honor of National Pancake Day (February 28, 2012), I made up a batch of Sticky Bun Pancakes. They were delicious, sweet, and and induced a tummy ache pretty much immediately after I ate them. But oh-so-worth it! Read on for the easy recipe and more photos!

Not quite like Mom’s

Sometimes you just need a taste of home. I am fortunate enough to have a long list of meals that remind me of my childhood, and of home.

On Sundays after church, our family would always sit down to fried eggs, grits, and bacon (sometimes Pleva’s cherry sausage as a special treat). Chicken enchiladas were another staple in our home. My mom’s recipe includes a very rich, creamy sour cream filling unlike any other enchilada I’ve had. In addition, a long list of nostalgic foods originates from the thousands of meals from Glen Eden, the American Plan resort my family owned and operated: prime rib, scrambled eggs with chives and cream cheese, and mint chocolate chip ice cream, to name a few. I also remember our Disney Sunday Night Family Movie dinners with my family: brie cheese, gourmet crackers, homemade popcorn, apples and pears. We’d sit down to the movie munching and crunching, and tossing popcorn to our dogs. I was fortunate to grow up in a home where things were almost always homemade. Instant chocolate pudding? Not in our house! Bagged microwave popcorn? Never! I don’t think I ever tried Hamburger Helper until I choked it down when one of my friends made it in college (never again!). Read More »

Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes with Pom Syrup

Photo isn’t too pretty, but I swear these were delicious!

It was one of those nights where I just felt like breakfast for dinner. And with a fridge stocked full of cute little bottles of pomegranate juice from Pom Wonderful, I decided to make some pancakes and slather them in pom syrup. Read More »

Granola for All

A couple weeks ago, my favorite little sister came to town with some of the other girls from the in-law side. On the agenda? Michigan Avenue shopping! I knew I didn’t have to plan much in the way of cooking since we planned to go out for dinners, but for breakfast, I baked off some homemade granola. I wish I had time to make this every month so that I would always have some on hand. Definitely worth making your own. No more store-bought granola for me! Absolutely perfect with some fresh berries and a bit of your favorite yogurt.

Making good from leftovers

Sometimes a fridge-full of food is daunting. Which was the case after our camping trip and a batch of leftovers we gratefully took home from a friend’s rehearsal dinner. Our fridge was full of bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade tzatziki sauce, watermelon, sweet corn and chicken pesto linguini, to name a few.

What did we do?

1) Chicken Pesto Linguini Frittata
I put about a cup of the leftover pasta in a hot oven-proof skillet.

Baking and Pastry – Day 14

Eclairs
My husband’s eyes went wide when he first tasted the eclairs I brought home. He asked that I not bring them into work the next day – he wanted these guys all to himself!

Doh! – nuts

I’m back from the best place on earth….what a wonderful weekend! This morning on my elevator trip up to the office (yuck), I learned that Homer Simpson was voted the best character created for TV in the last 20 years. I have a few thoughts on this, but it reminded me of the awesome-ness my mom and I created this past weekend at home.
Doh!-nuts!
I pulled this recipe after spending quite a bit of my time on this website. If you haven’t already, I highly suggest you check out her site. Her writing is always entertaining, her photography is incredible, and the recipes….they’re good! Including this one, for homemade glazed donuts.

Baking and Pastry – Day 13

Oh, you tart!

tart (tärt) noun. 1. a. A pastry shell with shallow sides, no top crust, and any of various fillings. b. A pie. 2. a. A promiscuous woman, especially a prostitute. b. A woman considered to be sexually promiscuous.

My Pear Almond Tart is not a prostitute. It’s definitely a pastry shell with shallow sides and an almond paste filling. However, the filling is often referred to as “frangipane,” which, when pronounced incorrectly, sounds slightly like the word “panty,” in which case, perhaps, you might view my tart as being slightly promiscuous.

Baking and Pastry – Day 8

Cinnamon Rolls and my Midterm
Making cinnamon rolls (part of the curriculum on Day 7 of Baking & Pastry) was pretty straight-forward. The only thing I struggled with was the fact that we weren’t supposed to slather softened butter on the dough before we sprinkled on the cinnamon mixture and rolled it up. In my opinion, that makes for the best cinnamon rolls (my Mom’s….er….Alton Brown’s!).But, considering the regular amount of butter, these rolls were still pretty darn good. My favorite part of this recipe was the filling – almond flour, cinnamon, sugar and a touch of flour. I’m definitely using almond flour next time I make cinnamon rolls! Read More »
